Emerging Legal Issues for Artificial Intelligence: Legal Liability, Discrimination, Intellectual Property Rights and Beyond

　　As AI becomes a pressing concern both in Taiwan and around the globe, the Seventh Academia Sinica Conference on Law and Science (ASCLS) discusses “Emerging Legal Issues for Artificial Intelligence: Legal Liability, Discrimination, Intellectual Property Rights and Beyond.” The conference of this year will gather legal scholars from several fields, including constitutional law, privacy, intellectual property, and competition law. It will also invite computer scientists and scholars from electric engineering to join an interdisciplinary dialogue. We believe that the global legal academy should invest more time in developing frameworks that are sufficiently sophisticated to address the challenges that AI poses to the current social and legal infrastructures. The challenges not only come from the social application of artificially intelligent agents to varied social contexts that raise issues of personhood, legal responsibility and creativity. The challenges also come from intelligence learning process that inherits and reproduces human bias and discriminatory desires. As AI and the potentials it brings become pressing concerns, these types of dialogues are increasingly important.
