Dr. Yu-Jie Chen is an Associate Research Professor at the Institutum Iurisprudentiae, Academia Sinica in Taiwan, and a Non-resident Affiliated Scholar at the U.S.-Asia Law Institute at NYU School of Law. She works in the fields of international law and human rights, with a research focus on China, Taiwan, cross-Strait relations, and Hong Kong.
Her scholarship examines a set of closely related issues, including Taiwan’s international status and international engagement; legal and political controversies surrounding “one China” claims; human rights in China’s administration of justice; China’s influence on the international human rights system; and the national security legal regime in Hong Kong.
Her academic work has been published internationally, including in The China Quarterly, and her commentary has appeared in outlets such as The New York Times and Australian Foreign Affairs.
Dr. Chen holds a J.S.D. and an LL.M. from NYU School of Law, as well as an LL.M. and an LL.B. from National Chengchi University in Taiwan. She was an inaugural Global Academic Fellow at the University of Hong Kong Faculty of Law and previously served as a research scholar at NYU’s U.S.-Asia Law Institute. Her professional background includes advocacy with Human Rights in China and legal practice at the Taipei-based international law firm Lee and Li. She was born and raised in Taiwan.
