Bio
Dr. Yu-Jie Chen is Associate Research Professor at the Institutum Iurisprudentiae, Academia Sinica, Taiwan, and a Non-Resident Affiliated Scholar at the U.S.-Asia Law Institute, NYU School of Law. She also teaches public international law at National Chengchi University. Her research focuses on international law and human rights, with particular attention to China, Taiwan, cross-Strait relations, and Hong Kong.
Her scholarship examines Taiwan’s international legal status and engagement; legal and political contestation surrounding “one China” claims; China’s influence on the international human rights system; human rights in China’s administration of justice; and Hong Kong’s national security regime. Her academic writing has appeared in journals including The China Quarterly, Asian Journal of International Law, and Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law. Her commentary has appeared in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and Australian Foreign Affairs.
Dr. Chen holds a J.S.D. and an LL.M. from NYU School of Law, and an LL.M. and LL.B. from National Chengchi University. She was an inaugural Global Academic Fellow at the University of Hong Kong Faculty of Law and previously served as a research scholar at NYU’s U.S.-Asia Law Institute. Before entering academia, she worked in human rights advocacy at Human Rights in China and practiced law at Lee and Li, a Taipei-based international law firm.
